Understanding and Addressing Workplace Bullying

As a clinical psychologist, I’ve seen firsthand the profound emotional and psychological toll workplace bullying can take. While bullying is often associated with schoolyards, it’s a problem that persists into adulthood and can manifest in professional environments, often more subtly but no less destructively.

What is Workplace Bulling ?

Workplace bullying involves repeated, harmful behaviors aimed at an individual. This can include:

  • Verbal abuse
  • Unjust criticism or humiliation
  • Exclusion from important activities
  • Sabotaging someone’s work or reputation

It often goes unnoticed or unreported because it can be cloaked as “tough management” or justified as part of the workplace culture.

The Psychological Bullying

Bullying at work can lead to anxiety, depression, and reduced self-esteem. Chronic stress from bullying often results in physical symptoms like headaches, sleep disturbances, or even heart problems. Left unchecked, the toxic environment can lead to burnout or force talented employees to leave, further destabilising the workplace.

How can you address it?

  1. Recognise the signs: Bullying is often subtle—watch for patterns of unfair treatment or exclusion.
  2. Document incidents: Keeping a record of incidents is critical for addressing the behaviour.
  3. Seek support: Talk to HR, a trusted colleague, or a mental health professional. You don’t have to handle it alone.
  4. Self-care: Prioritise your mental health. Therapy, relaxation techniques, and maintaining a strong support system can help manage stress.

Workplace bullying is more than an inconvenience—it can be a serious threat to mental health and well-being. By recognising the signs and taking proactive steps to address it, individuals can protect their psychological health and contribute to healthier work environments.
